Stump Removal

A letter from the guy who grinds the stumps

A letter from the guy who grinds the stumps you have been tripping over for years

Tony here – owner of Yonkers Tree Masters, certified tree nut, proud Westchester native, and the guy who shows up to make that weird stump in your yard disappear like Houdini with a chainsaw.

Look, nobody loves stumps. They’re like the clingy ex of landscaping – refusing to leave, always in the way, and constantly dragging down your curb appeal. Whether it’s the leftover base of a tree we just removed or that stubborn chunk of wood that’s been sitting like a throne in your backyard since Bush was in office, stump grinding and removal is how we set your property free with one of our tree services in Yonkers

And yes, we do it quickly, cleanly, and without wrecking your lawn, your day, or your wallet.

What is Stump Grinding? (and why it is better than a flame thrower)

Stump grinding is exactly what it sounds like – we bring in a commercial-grade machine that literally grinds the stump down below the surface level, along with most of the root flare. What’s left is a nice, clean patch of mulch that you can reseed, replant, or cover up like the stump was never even there.

And no, we don’t use fire, acid, or explosives. This is Yonkers, not a Looney Tunes episode. We use heavy-duty grinding machines operated by trained pros who’ve done hundreds of stumps across everything from the tight driveways of Dunwoodie to the wide-open yards of Crestwood.

Why Stump Removal Matters, It is not only about looks

Most people think a stump is just an eyesore. And they’re right – it’s ugly. But it’s also:

  • A trip hazard
  • A magnet for termites, ants, and beetles
  • A blocker for mowers, kids, and dogs
  • A root system that can keep growing
  • A legal liability (especially if it’s near a sidewalk)
  • Stump removal helps prevent all of that. It’s also the first step toward reclaiming your yard space. Want to install a patio? Plant a new tree? Level out your lawn? Gotta get rid of that stump first.

Full Vs. Partial Stump Removal? What is The Difference?

There are two basic types of stump removal: grinding and complete extraction.

Most Yonkers homeowners go with grinding – it’s faster, cleaner, and doesn’t tear up your yard. We grind the stump 4-12 inches below grade, leaving the roots to decompose naturally underground. It’s the perfect choice if you just want that stump gone and grass in its place.

Complete extraction is more invasive. We use a mini-excavator or similar equipment to remove the entire stump and root ball. This is usually done if you’re planning to build a structure on that spot – like a shed, deck, or driveway – and need the area fully root-free.

Whatever you need, we’ve got the tools and know-how to do it right.

Cleanup? Yeah we do that too

One of our biggest compliments is that we leave your yard cleaner than we found it. After stump grinding, we haul away debris (unless you want the mulch), smooth out the area, and even seed it if you’d like. No wood chips flying into your neighbor’s pool. No piles of debris left sitting like you hired a team of raccoons.

Just a clean, flat yard that looks better than it did the day before

Yonkers Stump Grinding Done It Right

Every yard is different. We’ve ground stumps that were:

Between retaining walls in Park Hill

On steep slopes in Northwest Yonkers

Surrounded by stone patios in Beech Hill

Tucked into narrow spaces in Nodine Hill

We know Yonkers lots. We know the rocky soil, the narrow driveways, the ancient trees. And we always take the time to do it right – safely, efficiently, and with respect for your space.

FAQs

  1. How much does stump grinding cost? Prices typically range from $150-$600 depending on size, depth, and location. We offer clear estimates with no surprises – and discounts if we’re already removing a tree on the same visit.
  2. How long does it take? Most stumps take 30-90 minutes to grind. Larger or harder woods might take longer, but we’re efficient and always prepared.
  3. Can I plant something where the stump was? Yes – especially with grinding. For best results, we recommend waiting a few months before planting a new tree in the exact same spot so the old roots can break down.
  4. Do you remove surface roots too? Yes, we can grind out surface roots if they’re exposed and in the way. Let us know during your walkthrough.
  5. Will the stump grow back? Not if it’s ground properly. Our process removes enough of the core that regrowth is highly unlikely.
  6. Is it safe for my pets and kids afterward? Absolutely. We leave the area smooth, clean, and safe – no sinkholes, spikes, or sharp edges.

7. Do I have to be home for you to grind the stump? Not necessarily. As long as we can access the area and you’ve approved the plan, we can knock it out while you’re at work or sipping coffee at Bozzo’s
